Hylobius Control

Hylobius Control

Click on our downloads link for a leaflet on the Hylobius control options we offer.

The curent industry options for weevil control fall into the four categories of:

  • Stand management - the Forestry Commission have developed a Management Support System. This allows foresters to input certain stand parameters and management objectives in order to arrive at a suggested strategy for Hylobius control.

  • Chemical treatment - the traditional method of control, but now under pressure from certification bodies to be the least favoured option. However, in the medium term chemicals will continue to provide effective and immediate control. We are presently carrying out trials using a "glue" - FlexCoat - mixed with the chemcial, that aims to bind the chemical to the plant for an extended period - up to 2 seasons. This work aims to significantly reduce the amount of chemical finding it's way into the forest and to reduce health and safety issues associated with field-spraying operations.

  • Physical protection - many attempts have been made to prevent Hylobius gaining access to young plants, with varying degrees of practicality and success. Our own patented WeeNet* was developed as a chemical free alternative and in light to moderate Hylobius attacks should provide over 90% protection. Trials are being conducted with WeeNets combined with a light overspray of chemical in a "glue" to improve this level of protection. (*British Patent 2411388B)

  • Biological control - various research institutes are looking at biological control agents such as parasitic wasps, fungi and parasitic nematodes. The latter is looking very promising and is available through the Forestry Commission Research division. More information on this can be obtained from www.forestresearch.gov.uk/nematodes .
